Which version of prestashop should i use?

I work with version 1.7.8.9
 
I use 8.1 and it's great. However, you may find many modules incompatible and may take a while for the authors to update their modules.

I was wondering if it would be an idea to upgrade to 1.7.8.9, and if it becomes unavoidable would it be easy to migrate to 8.1 ?
